200 YEARS OF DESIGN FROM VIENNA

LOBMEYR

22.–30.9.2023

Global design from Vienna! LOBMEYR is one of the city’s most traditional manufacturers. The family-run company has been creating contemporary reinterpretations of the relationship between glass and light since 1823: The old inspires the new, know-how acquired over centuries facilitates innovation. The unique company archive documents almost 200 years of the history of glass and not only provides a wealth of models, but is also a repeated source of inspiration. Elegantly handmade classics that are valued by connoisseurs all around the world are produced in cooperation with internationally renowned designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, Michael Anastassiades, Sebastian Menschhorn, Marco Dessí, and Monica Singer and Marie Rahm from Studio POLKA. And work by young Vienna designers can be found in major design collections including those of MoMA in New York, the V&A in London, and MAK in Vienna.

LOBMEYR is creating a glittering showcase on three levels in its flagship store at Kärntner Straße 26 for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK: with classics, re-editions, and the new products “Seven Goblets of Humanity” by Nives Widauer and “Poppea”, a drinking vessel by Sebastian Menschhorn. Another new feature is the collection of samples on the second floor, which has been renovated by the architecture office Hubmann-Vass and exhibits all important pieces going back to 1823. A children’s book written by Louise Rath, which, like the collection of samples, invites readers on a journey through 200 years of the history of glassmaking, is also on display. On 27.9., interested individuals are also recommended to grasp the rare opportunity to visit LOBMEYR’s time-honored glass and chandelier manufactory at Salesianergasse 9.
